Ten civilians were killed, and 23 others were injured in a clash with security forces in Ambo town on October 26, 2017, as reported by The Reporter. The death of two more people is yet to be confirmed.
Ambo youth clashed with members of the National Army force when they blocked the main road that passes through Ambo, Ginchi, and Guder to Addis Ababa in a protest that started on October 25, 2017. The youth were angered by the sight of trucks loaded with sugar passing through their town while they were facing a sugar shortage.
According to the report, Gadisa Dessalegn, the Head of Ambo City Communications Bureau, said that Ambo police attempted to settle the situation peacefully with the youth, but it escalated when the national army became involved.
Youth from nearby Gudar also clashed with security forces and suffered injuries while protesting against the imprisonment of Merera Gudina, a renowned opposition politician from the area. Details of the casualties are not yet confirmed.
