According to The Reporter, ten people were killed, and more than 40 were wounded in Assosa Town of the Benishangul Gumuz region. The clash broke out between the indigenous Berta people and members of other ethnic groups in the area when the indigenous ethnic groups allegedly demanded other minorities to leave the region.
The report noted that the government accused anti-reformists of inciting the violence. Forty-six suspects have been arrested in relation to the violence. Members of the National Defense Force are deployed in the regional capital and nearby towns, including Menge, Ura, Komash, Sherkile, and Ma’okom towns.
The report also highlighted that ethnic conflict is not limited to the Benishangul region. Dozens of people were killed in Hawassa, Wolaita Sodo, Wolkite and Harrare towns over ethnic clashes.
