Mob Lynched a Man in Shahemene

A man was lynched in Shashemene city of Oromia on August 12, 2018, during a rally held to welcome Oromo activist Jawar Mohammed. Tragically, three additional people lost their lives in a stampede at the entrance of the event venue.

According to a report by Addis Standard, local authorities stated that the violent attack occurred due to false information that the man was planning to detonate a car bomb. The mob set the car he was driving on fire. However, the officials confirmed that the car actually belonged to the City Administration and no bomb was found inside it.

Jawar Mohammed, responding to the incident, strongly condemned the violence on Twitter, stating, “The mob attack that occurred in Shashemene was cruel, disgusting, and damaging to the image of this beautiful city that has been a hotbed of resistance, bringing about the changes we enjoy today.”

ESAT reported that authorities have made arrests of suspects involved in the mob killing.
