At least three protestors were confirmed dead, and about 20 injured in Alamata on October 21, 2018, as reported by Addis Standard. Tigray Special forces cracked down on protesters who were pushing for the recognition of Raya people’s identity as Amharas. Three more people were said to be killed, but the number is not confirmed by authorities.
The Tigray region says the question is not acceptable as the groups are hiding their political interest behind identity questions. However, activists refute the regional government’s claim, saying they are bringing about a decade-old issue.
