Mob killed two researchers in Gojam, Amhara

Two researchers were stoned to death, and another was critically injured in the West Gojjam Zone of the Amhara region on October 23, 2018, as reported by The Reporter. While collecting samples from a primary school in Addis Alem, Wossen Tafere, a researcher and PhD candidate at the Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources, along with his friend Mandfro Abi, tragically lost their lives due to an attack by a mob that surrounded the school.

The report reveals that Wossen, who was born and raised in West Gojjam, was investigating the cause of common childhood stomach pain in the area. His friend, who had recently completed his PhD, was assisting him with the research. Despite having the necessary permits and paperwork from the local administration, a rumor spread among the community, alleging that the researchers were administering injections to the students and students who receive that are falling ill and dying. The mob’s actions went beyond the control of local law enforcement.
