One Dead and Several Injured in Dire Dawa Riot

A protest following the Timket Celebration led to clashes that claimed a life and injured many civilians in Dire Dawa, as reported by Addis Standard. The number of casualties is not confirmed. The conflict was instigated by groups throwing stones at a congregation celebrating Timket on Monday, January 21, 2019, in Dire Dawa.

According to the report, the protest turned violent the following day, and protestors called for the resignation of the mayor. They also vandalized properties and destroyed vehicles. Police said they made 84 arrests in relation to the incidents. People took to the streets for the fourth day, demanding public service improvements and the release of those arrested during the protests
