According to Addis Standard, clashes between the Amhara and Kimant communities in the Central and Western Gondar zone in February 2019 resulted in the death of over 30 people and the displacement of approximately 50,000 individuals. The conflict was sparked when an armed group attacked government security forces, as reported by the Amhara region’s communication bureau.
The clashes lasted for more than two weeks, causing loss of life and the displacement of communities. Another report from Addis Standard stated that 44,900 individuals were displaced from Chilga No. 1 and Chilga No. 2, seeking shelter near Dinay town in Western Dembiya. Additionally, around 300 houses were reportedly set on fire.
The report highlights that clashes between the Kimant and Amhara communities have been frequent since a referendum held two years ago. In the referendum, seven out of the eight woredas of the Kimant people voted to remain in the Amhara region. However, the result has been contested by groups advocating for the formation of a Kimant self-administration.
