According to Wazema, an unknown number of farmers were killed in a clash that erupted between armed Kimant farmers and the special forces of the Amhara region in Chilga woreda of Central Gondar. The clash, which began on September 27, 2019, lasted for more than four days. Although the exact number of deaths is not confirmed, witnesses reported civilian casualties resulting from the conflict. Despite the intervention of the federal defense force, the situation remains tense and unresolved.
The report indicates that the tension in the area stems from the dissatisfaction of the Kimant community over the regional government’s decision to designate three localities or kebeles as free zones in 2016. Both Kimants and other Amharas reside in the area.
