On February 26, 2022, according to Addis Standard, military personnel fired upon civilians in Dibate Woreda of the Metekel Zone, leading to the tragic demise of 26 individuals, including women and the elderly. Regional authorities have denied the involvement of government forces in the incident.
According to a resident who spoke with Addis Standard, community leaders, elders, and even a blind man were among those who were not spared from the violence. The resident mentioned that they were unable to confirm the total number of deaths or carry out proper burials, as the situation has not yet stabilized. Many individuals who fled the violence are still in hiding in the woods weeks after the crackdown.
The report indicates that government forces launched a crackdown in the area in search of rebel members who were allegedly responsible for the killing of three government officials and the wounding of seven others in a location called Tulu Dimtu. The regional police commissioner has denied the involvement of government forces in the violence.
