Addis Maleda reported that 11 people were killed, and at least 33 others were wounded in a clash between regional security forces and participants during the election of Akisho clan leaders in Bambas town, located in Gursum Woreda of Fafen Zone.
According to the report, the clash occurred due to a disagreement between the security forces and the public who had gathered to participate in the Akisha traditional ceremony on March 20 and 21, 2022.
Upon receiving reports of the violence, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) conducted an investigation and determined that the victims were killed by gunfire from armed individuals and due to the excessive use of force by the regional security forces.
It is further reported that the regional government provided compensation to the families of the victims and those who were injured in the clash. While the EHRC commends the compensation efforts, it strongly condemns the use of excessive force by the regional security forces. The EHRC also calls for accountability and justice to prevent such actions from recurring in the future.
