Extra Judicial Killing of 18 People, North Shoa, Oromia

Government security forces killed 18 people in Wore Jarso Woreda of the North Shoa Zone on May 3, 2022, as reported by BBC Amharic, citing residents. The woreda Administrator admitted that fewer than 18 people, who were affiliated with the Oromo Liberation Army, were killed.

The report indicates that after the government vowed to eradicate the Oromo Liberation Army a few weeks ago, several civilian deaths have been reported from various parts of the zone.

BBC interviewed the father of a young man killed by security forces. He stated that government security forces arrived in their village on Monday, May 2, 2022, in the morning. He and his son were watching over their animals at around 6:15 am. The security forces summoned them and immediately took his son away, tying his hands behind his back. They claimed to have found a true OLA member. The next morning, when the father went to the camp where the security forces were stationed, carrying food and a change of clothes for his son, he learned that many people, including his son, were killed at 5 am in the morning. “The government is exterminating our innocent children,” said the father. He mentioned that his son had no involvement with OLA, but he was denied due process and justice.

Another resident told BBC that he lost three of his relatives in their twenties. He stated that 14 out of the 18 people killed were from his village. Decons, daily laborers, and university students were among the victims.
