On November 6, 2022, a group of armed men opened fire and ruthlessly killed fifteen Christians who were gathered for worship at a Mekan Yesus church in Begalo Kebele of Sasiga Woreda, as reported by BBC Amharic. Additionally, several others sustained injuries in the attack.
According to the report, the Ethiopian Evangelical Church strongly condemn the attack and expressed anguish at the government’s failure to prevent such heinous acts of violence and its inability to hold the perpetrators accountable.
Furthermore, the report emphasized the Church’s grave concern regarding the escalating violence in different parts of the region, which has claimed numerous civilian lives. Recently, another incident was reported in Mendi, where 15 Christians and church workers were tragically killed while returning from a church service. The Church calls upon the Government to prioritize peace negotiations in Oromia, as it has done in Tigray.
