Four people were killed in a clash between Amhara regional security forces and Fano militias in Mota town, Amhara region, as reported by Wazema. The conflict arose after the arrest of a Fano leader who is accused of training members in defiance of the government’s order to cease such activities.
According to Wazema, the regional authorities confirmed that four members of their security forces were shot and killed, with some injured. Eyewitnesses suggest that approximately six individuals may have sustained injuries during the clash.
Fano is a group of informal security forces that organized themselves to protect the Amhara region against TPLF incursions. They joined forces with the Ethiopian government to expel the TPLF from the Amhara region. However, it appears that trust between the two entities has deteriorated, and the government is now being accused of cracking down on Fano members and attempting to disarm them. The regional government denies these accusations and asserts that it is conducting operations against criminals who disrupt the daily lives of Amhara region residents.
