Armed men killed 12 civilians and injured eight in Amaro woreda of the SNNP region during a week-long period of violence, as reported by Addis Standard. The violence resulted in the displacement of over 11,000 individuals, primarily from the Koore locality. According to the Woreda’s Communication Affairs Bureau, the violence was perpetrated by an armed group composed of members from the Guji community and individuals advocating for the creation of Gumayde Special woreda.
The report further explains that in 2011, the Segen Area People zone was established, which included Woredas such as Amaro, Konso, Ale, Burji, and Derashe. However, Konso initiated a movement to separate from the zone and was granted permission to secede in 2018. Consequently, the remaining woredas became independent entities, and the Segen Area City Administration was disbanded. This restructuring was met with opposition from groups that preferred the remaining four woredas to form the Gumayde Peoples Special Woreda and grant special woreda status to Segen City. The reconfiguration exacerbated the already fragile security situation in the area, which had been impacted by border clashes. For more details, please refer to the full report.
