A group of organized youth in the East Wollega zone of Oromia Region pulled two civilians of ethnic Tigrayans, Fitsum Mehari and Haftu Hagezom, out of their car and stoned them to death, as reported by BBC Amharic. The police chief of Sibula woreda confirmed the deaths of the two civilians and stated that the violence stemmed from a personal conflict.
According to the report, Fitsum and Haftu had come from Tigray 30 years ago as children through the 1984/1985 resettlement program. They had been residing in Wollega with their family ever since. They were on their way to Mekelle, as Fitsum was moving to his new house there, when the youth stopped their vehicle and killed them.
The family of the deceased has reported that they were not even allowed to retrieve the bodies from the police. No arrests related to this killing have been disclosed by the police.
