Up to 66 people were killed, and 33 others were injured in recent violence in the Konso Zone, as reported by Addis Standard. According to the Southern Nations and Nationalities People’s Region security office, the conflicts have also displaced 130,000 people from their villages.
The Konso zone has been facing violence since its separation from the Segen Area People’s Zone in 2008, but the latest conflict also affects communities in Amaro, Derashe, and Ale woredas. Residents who spoke with Addis Standard say that the culprits are groups opposing the new structure of the Konso zone.
