Over 1600 Civilians Killed in Tole, West Wollega

The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), also known as Shene, killed over 1,600 civilians in Tole kebele of the West Wollega zone in Oromia as reported by Addis Maleda. The targeted killings based on identity began on June 11, 2022, and persisted for several days, as revealed by witnesses interviewed by Addis Maleda.

According to the witnesses, they personally counted and buried around 900 bodies. However, this figure does not include those individuals who were burned inside their homes or those whose bodies are still missing. In addition, more than 3,000 people have been displaced as a result of the violence. The armed perpetrators also looted the properties of the fleeing residents.

The report further highlights the community’s frustration with the lack of emphasis on security by the regional government. Despite the deployment of national defense force members in the area, OLA fighters continue to operate in the forests surrounding the township. These fighters persistently carry out attacks in areas where there is no presence of the Federal Army.
