The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has confirmed that three individuals from the Tigray ethnic group were killed on July 21, 2021, in a place called Woreta, located in the Fogera woreda of the South Gondar zone, as reported by Addis Maleda.
The reports indicate that the three individuals were victims of a mob attack in retaliation for the TPLF’s attack in Fiyel Wuha. On July 11, 2021, a member of the Fogera security force and the woreda’s Peace and Security Head were killed during the TPLF attack. People who gathered for the funeral at the hometown of the victims carried out the retaliatory attack. The report mentions that swift measures taken by the local security forces prevented further escalation of violence.
According to Addis Maleda, the EHRC is deeply concerned about the violation of civil rights of Tigrayans, including arbitrary arrests and business closures, in connection with the conflict in the north. Similar violations have also been reported in other parts of the country, including Addis Ababa. The EHRC calls for the urgent restoration of rights and an end to media campaigns that fuel hatred and weaken social cohesion.
In addition, the EHRC stated that the reports of targeting civilians, the use of child soldiers, and the treatment of prisoners of war are deeply concerning. The EHRC further emphasizes the need for immediate attention to the situation of Eritrean refugees in the Tigray region.
It was also mentioned that the lack of communication in Tigray has posed challenges for EHRC in conducting the assessment.
