The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reports that 173 civilians and 15 security forces were killed, and 616 sustained injuries during protests in the Oromia region, as reported by The Reporter. Youth were protesting against the absence of good governance and human rights violations at various administrative levels in the region.
According to the report, EHRC said the legitimate questions were ‘hijacked’ by the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and other internal and external ‘anti-peace’ elements. The report also added that locally registered political parties were involved in the violence and protests. The ERCH believes that the police used a proportional response that prevented the security situation from worsening.
The Reporter also added the findings of another EHRC repor, which stated, 87 civilians and 2 police were killed following protests related to the self-administration request of Kimant nationalities in North Gondar, Amhara. The reports reveals that the police in the Amhara region exerted disproportionate force that led to inter-communal clashes. It also claims that some members of the Kimant community are responsible for inciting clashes and deadly attacks.
