Tigrayan forces executed approximately 49 civilians in Kobo and Chenna between August 31 and September 9, 2021, according to Addis Standard‘s report based on the findings of Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International.

Witnesses interviewed by HRW stated that Tigray forces entered Chenna on August 31, 2021, and engaged in fighting with the Ethiopian National Defense Force and Amhara Forces. The report reveals that the Tigray forces “summarily executed 26 civilians in 15 separate incidents before withdrawing on September 4.” In addition, the report states that on September 9, 2021, the Tigray forces executed 23 individuals in Kobo in four separate attacks, allegedly in revenge for earlier attacks by farmers on the same day.

The report from Addis Standard on February 16, 2022, includes the account of Amnesty International, which exposes deliberate killings and the gang rape of women and children in Chenna and Kobo. The Tigrayan forces were also involved in acts of brutality, death threats, and the use of ethnic slurs and derogatory remarks.

According to the report, women and girls as young as 14 were subjected to brutality and gang rape by the Tigray forces in Chenna. Amnesty International conducted interviews with rape survivors, some of whom had experienced gang rape in the presence of their children. Seven of the survivors were under 18 years old. The report also notes that the perpetrators forced the women to feed them before the acts of violence were committed.
